The KRG-D50 is one of the latest additions to gear4's line of speakers. It's an iPod dock, FM and DAB radio and an alarm clock all in one. In fact, the KRG-D50 is gear4's first DAB radio system. I have been using one for just over a couple of weeks now and thought I would share my experience.
Gear4 claims it features a stylish design that combines retro elements with an updated modern look, making the KRG-D50 fit perfectly into any interior, from kitchens to bedrooms. I however thought it looked and felt more like something my granddad would have owned, especially with the retro antenna that you have to pull out from the back when you want to listen to the radio. Once I got past its looks however, things got better.
As soon as I plugged the unit in, it automatically started scanning the air waves for DAB stations. As someone who has never owned a DAB radio, I was pleased to see it had automatically set the time and date as soon as it had tuned into a DAB radio station. That, is a feature I wish a lot of other devices had. The sound quality doesn't disappoint either. Despite only having a single speaker, the sound quality is really good and the bass very strong for a radio/iPod dock this size.

Spotify is a music streaming service that has gained a lot of popularity recently. It's similar to last.fm in that you can stream music from a particular artist or genre but unlike last.fm, Spotify gives you complete control over which tracks you listen to and when. It does all this using the free Spotify application which bears a very familiar iTunes-like interface.
The most important feature for the success of any music streaming service has to be the size of its music library. Spotify has a great music library thanks to deals with the major labels (Universal, Sony BMG, EMI, Warner, etc.) as well as a number of smaller labels. The Spotify library is currently being updated and claims to be one of the fastest growing catalogues of licensed music in the world. Some artists have however opted not to be part of the Spotify library: Metallica, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, ACDC and Led Zeppelin.
The Spotify application offers four ways of listening to music:
Streaming by genre(s) and decade
Within the radio function, Spotify lets you select one more genres as well as the decades. The ability to select the decades is a nice touch that most other music stream services don't provide. Finally, you won't have to worry about a track by the Spice Girls showing up in your music stream, unless of course you are into this sort of thing, in which case you can set the decades slider to "90s to 00s".
